ROYCE GRACIE BIOGRAPHY
Royce Gracie is the son of the legendary Hélio Gracie who is the father figure of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) along with his brother Carlos Gracie. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil . Royce learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from his father and his older brothers Rorion Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Rickson Gracie .
At the age of 17 he was a blue belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu and was given the opportunity to move to the United States of America by his brother, Rorion Gracie, to help teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from his garage. Royce jumped at the opportunity and moved to California even though he knew little English.
Within a couple of years of moving to the United States Royce received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
At this time he was also involved in the now famous “Gracie Challenge” which was an open invitation and a challenge to all martial artists to see if they could defeat a Gracie in a no-rules fight, if anyone could then they would walk away with $100,000…………………….nobody ever defeated a Gracie although many tried.
November 12, 1993 marked a massive change in the life of Royce Gracie after his brother, Rorion Gracie, devised the Ultimate Fighting Championship which would put fighters of various martial arts together to see who came out on top. There were 16 fighters with the like of Ken Shamrock who would take up the challenge. Royce Gracie, at less than 180lbs, was chosen to represent Gracie Jiu Jitsu and showcase it to the world as a system that could defeat much larger opponents.
In his first professional fight Royce Gracie won Art Jimmerson, once a top ten cruiserweight boxer. In his semi-final bout Royce Gracie gave away nearly 50lbs to Ken Shamrock who was atough competitor and had proven grappling ability. Royce won with a rear choke that forced the submission from Ken Shamrock. Royce was again outweighed in the final of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but still managed to beat the Savate World Champion, Gerard Gordeau, again with a rear choke. This was the show that finally launched Royce Gracie and the Gracie Jiu Jitsu system to the hot topic of every martial artist and fight fan around the world. Royce Gracie went on to the most distinguished mixed martial arts fighting carrer to date with wins in both the UFC and PRIDE fighting championships and Royce Gracie is the only person have ever fought and won 4 fights in 1 night.
Royce Gracie has taught Gracie Jiu Jitsu to many celebrities such as Guy Ritchie and Nicholas Cage as well as martial arts legend Chuck Norris as well as training law enforcement officers and the armed forces. He also host many seminars around the world still showcasing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and its proven system of fighting.
We know that there are a lot of schools in Colorado that teach Jiu Jitsu, and deciphering where to go is not always easy. We invite you to try two classes for free so you can see the difference for yourself. Not only do we teach the theory and techniques of Jiu Jitsu, but more importantly, lessons that can help in daily life. This includes self defense. Jiu jitsu is an incredibly effective martial art, but sometimes you are attacked without provocation and you need to know more than just how to score points in a tournament. The Gracie self defense aspects of what is taught at the Relson Gracie Academy will provide our students with the necessary skills to deal with all situations, not just what happens on the ground. Our goal is to provide students with such tools as…. Confidence, Self Awareness, Respect and Discipline. You will find that these are more than words at RGA, it is a lifestyle.
What makes us different than ANY OTHER Academy, is our attention to Relson Gracie’s Jiu Jitsu. Relson does not deviate far form the path of what his father Helio taught him, and we do not deviate from what Relson has taught us.
By Ron Goldstein, Boulder MMA Examiner
Recently Examiner had a chance to sit down with Owner/operator Steve Hordinski about his brand new Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in Littleton. Have you ever met someone that lives, eats, breathes and sleeps their passion?…Well I sure did when I sat down with Steve in his new gym location of: 6707 West Ken Caryl Ave in Littleton. The Denver bred Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt is a man that truly “BELIEVES” and has a wonderful story behind him. Come & meet this devoted Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.
Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy
Steve’s story begins with his involvement in the traditional martial arts of: Tae Kwon Do & Kenpo Karate. He eventually become a Kenpo Karate & Kabuto black belt and utilized a disciplined approach which transcended into many facets of his life. Once he enlisted into the Navy, his opportunity to train with Phil Cardella in Hawaii opened up his world to Jiu-Jitsu. He started training in Gracie Jiu Jitsu & entered in his first tournament in1997 and has never looked back. His rich BJJ training history begins with winning a Hawaiian State Championship & getting to train with the likes of grappling greats like: Daniel Moraes, Fredson Alves, and Relson Gracie himself. He’s also trained with other well respected Hawaiian grappling athletes while working as a Navy deep sea diver. This training led him to work closely with the man that would eventually change Steve’s life forever…Relson Gracie.
Ron & Steve Hordinski

After the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in 2000, Steve went back to Hawaii & began working with Relson Gracie on maximizing his guard & developing a total game. He worked tirelessly on improving his technique and ultimately Relson Gracie saw the passion that Steve had for their family’s legendary system. His intense focus on living & embracing the lifestyle of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu brought Relson to Steve in a hotel room one day. His words etched a place in Steve’s heart & soul. Relson told Steve, “My Jiu-Jitsu was given to me by my father like an umbilical connection. I see the same love you have for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu & because of this…I will do the same for you, that my father (Helio) did for me.”
Steve hopes that the philosophy that he brings to his gym, will inspire many people to share the lessons he learned from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The pillars of the Gracie philosophy incorporate traits such as: respect, honor, courage, discipline, support and family. These traits still stand today with an even greater presence than ever before in both Steve’s & the Gracie’s way of conducting life. This journey has virtually become a religious experience for Steve & his view of building a positive lifestyle through a family of old & new Gracie Jiu-Jitsu students drives this quiet, humble man.
He looks to be involved in helping people understand that training in this system is more than just an exercise. It is the foundation for a disciplined lifestyle that has brought so much positive change in the world of martial arts. Steve looks to grow his new academy by developing a strong community involvement with: self defense, rape-prevention, grappling, weight control, MMA and most importantly…kids classes. His approach is simple. He strives to make everyone feel comfortable & learn everything from beginner to high level technical Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. If you live in the south Denver areas, Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy is one place NOT to miss.
